Developers must check their existing apps as Google has upgraded the API target for new apps in Android 14

Android 14, the next major update for Android, is scheduled for release in August 2023. As with every annual update, Google's distribution will introduce significant changes that app developers must be ready for. Older apps, in particular, may encounter issues.

With the release of Android 14, the target API level for apps will be raised to 33. This means that all new apps must be developed for Android 13 or higher. Google is also taking a more restrictive approach to sideloading. From Android 14, it will no longer be possible to install apps outside the official Google Play Store that are not at least Android 6. Although Android 6 is now almost eight years old, this move shows that Google is starting to actively tackle outdated apps. Google states that the new restrictions are due to security concerns. It is likely that upcoming versions of Android will maintain the current trend of increasing the required API level.

App developers must review their apps to meet increased requirements. AppPlusMobile Systemhaus offers various apps, such as the employee app, designed for companies and their employees, and the appmover peer-to-peer sponsoring platform. All apps have been updated to meet the required standard and ported to Android 14 to ensure they run on the latest versions of Android.
