ONE BOOTH FOR ALL: unconventional assistance for those in need

How can a local authority provide support in a different way that is often overlooked? Dortmund is a pioneer in this regard with the neighbourhood stall, which offers personal and direct assistance.

The city of Dortmund's “Nachbarbude (neighbourhood booth) project connects the players with the citizens.

We bundle the diverse social and cultural offerings in the neighbourhood, make them visible and assist those seeking advice and refer them to the right place."

In practical terms, the aim is to assist one another within the local community. This could involve a city-sponsored tradesperson repairing a leaky sink or a young person seeking an apprenticeship in the area. It is important to ensure that volunteer offers are visible and utilised effectively.

How does this work?

By integrating a contact point, the booth, directly into the neighbourhood, citizens and those involved in the community can receive personal support, networking, and assistance.

What will happen in the long term?

The neighbourhood booth was launched as part of Dortmund's designation as the 'European Capital of Innovation 2021' and is set to become a flagship project for the whole country.

Therefore, we need to consider how we can provide this service in a simple and personalised manner while also ensuring its future viability, encouraging as many local authorities as possible to participate.

Why is it digital?

A digital approach is being considered to simplify processes and distribute local authorities' investments in a legally compliant manner without incurring major administrative costs. This approach will be sensibly integrated into the project, which is deliberately geared towards personal contact. Planning is underway with the Dortmund Economic Development Agency, and we expect to see the first results in October.
